PC vs. Flame-Retardant PA66: Picking the Right Industrial Push Button Switch Housing

Ask any control panel builder about switch specs and they’ll list contact blocks or continuous amp ratings all day long. Hardly anyone gives a second thought to the outer shell. Yet on a working factory floor, that industrial push button switch housing takes constant punishment. Operators punch them with greasy work gloves, cutting fluid splashes across the panel door, and internal heat bakes the plastic from behind.

Most export machinery uses two main plastics for switch bodies: Polycarbonate (PC) or Flame-Retardant Polyamide 66 (PA66 nylon). Fresh out of the shipping carton, both look like tough molded plastic. Throw them onto an active production line, though, and their long-term performance splits completely apart.

Polycarbonate (PC): High Impact Strength, But Poor Chemical Defense

If you need raw impact resistance, Polycarbonate delivers. Engineers use clear PC for safety glasses, face shields, and heavy protective machine doors because it withstands direct physical blows. If a tech drops a heavy wrench right onto a PC operator cap, it absorbs the blow and rarely shatters. Because raw PC is naturally transparent, switch makers rely heavily on it for illuminated push buttons so LED light shines through bright and clean without dulling the color.

The catch? PC hates shop chemicals. Let a mechanic with machine oil or solvent-soaked gloves press a PC button all shift long, and the liquid slowly attacks the resin. That chemical breakdown—known as stress crazing—starts as invisible micro-cracks before turning the outer shell brittle and useless.

Flame-Retardant PA66 (Nylon): Built for Oily Machinery

For dirty, greasy machine environments, heavy-duty PA66 nylon is the go-to material. Blended with flame retardants, it handles the nasty stuff that destroys PC. PA66 shrugs off cutting fluids, synthetic grease, diesel fuel, and harsh cleaning sprays. You can splash hydraulic oil over a PA66 body all day long on a CNC lathe, and the polymer stays rock-solid.

Fire safety is another huge deal. Quality PA66 housings meet strict UL94-V0 standards. If a loose wire starts arcing and baking the inside of a panel, PA66 stops burning the second the spark goes out, meaning no flaming plastic drips down onto lower components.

Mechanical Stress, Terminal Torque, and Thread Stripping

One thing people often ignore is how plastic behaves when a maintenance tech clamps down on the wire terminals.

Thin or cheap plastic housings flex under a screwdriver. If the plastic wall around the screw block is brittle, it snaps under basic tightening torque. PA66 nylon has incredible mechanical toughness and thread-holding strength. You can drive terminal screws down tight without stripping out the plastic threads or cracking the rear terminal barrier.

On top of that, PA66 handles mechanical fatigue from machine vibration better than PC. Over millions of button presses, the mounting clips and internal latching arms stay springy instead of fatigue-cracking.

UV Resistance and Weathering Outdoors

Sunlight is another killer that builders forget. If your control panels sit near large plant windows or go outside on mobile crushing spreads, UV rays start working overtime.

Unprotected PC turns yellow and loses its punch after a couple of seasons in the sun. PA66 holds up much better against weathering when mixed with proper UV stabilizers, keeping the structural frame intact outdoors without turning dusty or chalky.

Combining Both Materials for Maximum Field Life

Smart machinery builders don’t use just one plastic for the whole switch. They mix and match to get the strengths of both.

  • PC Operator Lenses: Used strictly on the front push button cap where you need high impact defense and clear LED light throw.
  • PA66 Base Housings: Molded for the main body and rear terminal blocks to fight off oil, hold tight screw threads, and satisfy fire codes.
  • High-Tension Mounting Clips: Formed from heavy PA66 so they lock onto metal panel walls without sagging or cracking over time.
  • Sealing Channels: Built right into the PA66 collar to keep rubber oil-seals pressed tight against the cabinet door.

What to Check When Sourcing Switch Housings

When you source an industrial push button switch housing from an overseas supplier, don’t just take their word for it. Ask for actual lab test sheets.

Make sure the base PA66 material has real UL94-V0 fire ratings so your gear passes field inspections without a hitch. Check the wall thickness around the back terminals, too—thin plastic will flex and strip out when techs torque down the screw clamps.
